It's been a year since I launched Mutually Inclusive PR into what seemed then an already crowded group of public relations and communications blogs.
I've learned that, despite a cadre of Canadian PR bloggers, there are still many issues that don't get examined. My list of things I should write about some day continues to lengthen.
I've also learned that:
People all over the world are interested in some of the same things that fascinate or puzzle me.
Chasing after readership takes a lot of time and energy, and should only be pursued if you're willing to maintain a regular stream of whatever kind of writing attracted the new readers in the first place.
Conversations are more valuable than information exchange. because you're more likely to learn something about yourself, society and the world by 'talking' with people.
Russell Beattie really is a bit of an ass, but he sure knows the mobile phone industry.
True insight comes from close examination of the specifics of a situation, to test whether they bear out an assumption or a theory. Theory on its own is much less useful.
I'm part of an old boys' network (or so Judy G. tells me).
Professional development can be fun and innovative; it doesn't have to involve sitting in a classroom or hotel ballroom watching an expert flip through a PowerPoint presentation.
Fact checking is always worthwhile, unless your memory is way better than mine.
I'm looking forward to new connections, a lot of learning, and hopefully some new online stuff in the coming year that let me practice the fine art of photography.
