I always suspected there were courses like this available somewhere in the world, and now I see North Vancouver's Capilano College is offering a program in Global Stewardship.
This program is targeted at people who want to work in the international non-profit sector.
How often do you find a field of study that asks for these qualities:
- passion
- compassion
- commitment
- the desire to work with others to solve complex problems
- the commitment to give back to your community
- a love of travel
- a sense of humour
- a concern for global issues
Participants balance course work with volunteer work. For someone who wants to complete a university degree, the courses are transferable to a degree-granting university (as with all inter-institution transfers, participants are advised to check on transferability to the university of their choice BEFORE enrolling).
The Global Stewardship program is an example of targeted programming and niche marketing by community colleges and universities. It's a smart move, in a market that pits institutions against each other for the best and brightest in a given field (yes, attracting quality students makes a huge difference in the reputation of an educational institution).
For Grade 11 or 12 students, there's also the possibilty of a small bursary for the program.
