Anyone who has ever tried to get a well-entrenched screw out of wood knows it can be a bitch. The only screws that don't seem to strip when under stress are Robertsons.
So when using screws for a new project, my default is always a Robertson screw -- the ones with the square hole instead of a slot or a cross.
Marketing/branding/life observer Seth Godin writes about the foothold Robertson screws are gaining in the U.S.
Which shows once again that Canadian have better screws. Funny thing is, I didn't realize these vastly superior screws weren't in common use in the United States.
For any American handymen or handywomen out there, trust Seth. The square-holed screws are way better.
